The Stone Whisperer of Nasu: Katsunori Shirai's Vision in Ashino

In the quiet, green landscapes of Nasu lies the Nasu Ashino Stone Museum, a place unlike any other. Originally a humble rice warehouse, this striking building is now a beautiful blend of local stone and light. For a time, its run-down state was a sad symbol of the town’s decline. But where many saw decay, Katsunori Shirai (Shirai-san) saw potential. It was his vision that sparked the building’s revival, and he collaborated with renowned architect Kengo Kuma to bring it to life.

Shirai-san is the third generation of his family to run Shirai Sekizai, a local stone masonry business. His family’s company has long quarried the local Ashino stone, a material with a warm, gentle character. However, his official title only tells a small part of his story.

Shirai-san’s focus is on something more profound than simply selling stone. “I want to understand what people are looking for, and then create something that goes beyond their expectations, something that enriches their life,” he explains. This philosophy is the cornerstone of his work. He doesn’t just provide a material; he helps shape a home, a garden, or a monument, embedding it with the quiet beauty of the Nasu landscape.

This vision found its ultimate expression in the Stone Museum. It was a collaborative effort, bringing together artists and creators to build an entirely unique space. Today, it serves not only as a gallery but as a dynamic cultural hub for concerts, photoshoots, and quiet conversations over coffee. It has become, in his words, “a place that exists nowhere else.” For Shirai-san, the joy comes from seeing the space used and loved, and from the simple, heartfelt “thank you” from a visitor.

Meeting him, you get a real sense of his deep love for Nasu. He speaks of its charms, such as the beautiful nature and easy access to Tokyo, alongside his dream of sharing the region’s unique value with more people. He hopes that by showcasing the beauty of Ashino stone, he can contribute to a vibrant future for the town he loves. A visit to the museum offers more than just architectural marvels. It’s an invitation into Shirai-san’s world and a chance to see the soul of Nasu, lovingly carved in stone.
